Paul Fong for City Council, District 1

Picture
Paul Fong has served San Jose City Council, District 1 as an elected official for the past 21 years, and he has been active in District 1 for over 35 years.

West San Jose is Paul’s adopted home. A high school and college football linebacker, Paul accepted the post of Assistant Football Coach at West Valley College to share his enthusiasm for sports with the community. After West Valley, Paul proudly served as Assistant Varsity Coach at Lynbrook High School. After finishing his degrees, Paul taught students from District 1 as a professor of political science at Evergreen Valley College.

With a strong desire to have more of an impact on the community college system, Paul ran for and won a seat on the Foothill-DeAnza Community College Board of Trustees, which includes part of District 1, and served for 15 years.

Six years ago, Paul ran for State Assembly to help California recover from one of its worst recessions and the resulting budget crisis. Paul made tough choices by cutting billions of dollars to balance budgets while keeping vital services and the cost to local residents in mind.

Representing West San Jose — including District 1 — in the Assembly, Paul saw crime increase, while the lives of residents got worse. Instead of tackling these issues head on, city politicians were too busy arguing in City Hall. Frustrated by this inaction, Paul decided to run for San Jose City Council District 1 to improve public safety and strategically restore vital social services.

Paul holds two degrees from San Jose State University; a B.A. in Sociology and a Masters in Public Administration (M.P.A.). He also holds a Masters in Education (MAEd.) from the University of San Francisco. He and his wife, Grace, are owners of a small business in the Silicon Valley. Paul and Grace have three adult children, Sean, Nicole and Sydney, and live in west San José.
