“A DECENT WAGE”
While
the definition of a “Decent Wage” differs based on who you talk to, and
generally you will find that most people will have a difficult time
defining and or explaining their position on what a decent wage is…we in
organized Labor have no problem defining a decent wage. Union wages are the
definition of a decent wage…take for example both the Federal Government
and State Governments make determinations on what a fair wage is in
construction (called the prevailing wage or Davis Bacon rates). In most
cases, with few exceptions, you will find that the prevailing wage is that
of the Union’s collectively bargained rate for the area (California and the
Federal Government use Counties to define these areas).
Additionally
you will find that more and more local governments (cities / counties) are
establishing by policy “Living Wages” for employers who contract with such
local government agencies. A Living Wage is nothing more than the wage a
worker needs to earn in order to actually Live and survive in an urban area
such as the Bay Area and or other metropolitan areas where the State
mandated minimum wage does nothing to provide security or shelter for a
working family.
